Meggitt’s engineering and research teams are pushing material science to the limit and are continuing to explore new high temperature materials for gas turbine engines. Our team was part of the EU-funded research project called STARGATE (sensors towards advanced control and monitoring of gas turbine engines) that investigated a range of novel sensing techniques for the next generation of green and efficient gas turbines.

To understand how we can measure from -54 to +1200°C (-65 to 2192°F), see our range of devices below:

Our platinum resistance thermometers include the following features:

  • Accuracy: 0.65°C at 250°C (DIN EN 60751 F0,15 (class A))
  • Types: Two, three or four wire systems
  • Temperature: 250°C
  • Element: Ceramic substrate, PT100 or 200
  • Sheath: stainless steel

When the heat is on

On military engines, Meggitt’s patented radiation pyrometers can provide temperature readings to within 0.4% at 1000°C.

This helps to deliver maximum thrust and efficiency without overheating the turbine blades.

Our thermocouples include the following features:

  • Accuracy: 0.4% at 1000°C (ASTM E 230 ‘special limits’)
  • Types: Bare wire or mineral insulated with swaged tip, submerged and exposed junction
  • Temperature: 1000°C (continuous)
  • Element: K type to ASTM E 230
  • Sheaths: Stainless steel, Inconel 600, Hastelloy® alloy X, alloy 230

Key customers

Our customers include: GE, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce and Safran.

On the LEAP and PurePower® engines, our design expertise, combined with our pedigree in designing high reliability/high temperature solutions, meant that we were the low risk option for this latest generation of engines.
